Did Work
Today I finished up what I was working on yesterday; the rear transmission mount on my car. As I mentioned yesterday, there’s only two bolts holding it on, and one bolt wouldn’t loosen. Well, I got that bolt to loosen…or so I thought. What actually happened was the welded-on nut attached to the subframe broke loose, and the bolt had welded itself to the aluminum shaft inside the...

Did Work
I have the week off from work, so I’m taking the opportunity to get some things on my car done. Today I replaced the water pump, serpentine belt, driver’s side motor mount, passenger side motor mount, and did some repairs to the airbox and the lower belt guard using my plastic welder (now one of my new favorite tools). Here’s the new water pump and driver’s side engine...

I’m super psyched because yesterday my Airtech Manta tail for the Cyclone arrived yesterday on my doorstep. It’s in great shape, and I can’t wait to fit it. I just have to call Airtech sometime to order a replacement seat, since this one is missing the seat. The rear is cut out to fit the stock taillight, but I might fill it in and mount a different light instead. Perhaps one...

Merry Christmas to me!
While shopping for Christmas gifts this year, I decided to throw in a couple of things for myself that I know others probably wouldn’t have thought of for me. The first thing I bought was the Bike EXIF calendar, which I highly recommend. The other presents for myself came from Amazon. I ordered a heated seat cover for my car (toasty buns! It’s wonderful), and used copies of Big...

She came from the 80s, armed with a Trans Am time machine and a teasing comb. (Hey, I think I just came up with a plot for a TV show!)

I guess I can give a little update on the headlight project, since I worked on it for quite a while on Sunday. In a moment of clarity, I came up with an idea of how to save the headlight adjusters so they’re actually usable once I reassemble the headlight. What I did was removed them from the bucket, then reassembled them on the back of the reflector assembly where they mount to it, and...

A little update on the headlight I’m working on. Last night I plastic-welded the headlight trim ring and rough sanded it, as well as the headlight bucket. I think I’m going to end up filling in that indented area where the mounting nut is with JB Weld. It’s really difficult to get in there to smooth it out, and it will probably be stronger if I fill it in anyway, so that’s...

I rarely ever post pictures of myself on here (though I’m sure many of you are familiar with my left hand by now), but a friend had been asking me for pictures of me on my new bike, so I finally obliged. In case you were wondering, this is not my riding attire. These are my normal clothes.

Woohoo, look at what I got in the mail today: All the cool kids are getting the Bike EXIF calendar, and I know you want one! You want to be one of the cool kids too, right? ;-) http://www.bikeexif.com/motorcycle-calendar http://www.magcloud.com/browse/Issue/133595 You have to punch your own hole in it to hang it, but otherwise this is the nicest calendar I’ve had in the past few years....

With a lot of help from my Dad, my garage and basement workshop are about as finished and organized as they’re going to get right now. I think I mentioned that I was renting a garage from a church, so my tools and parts were kind of spread between my home and the garage. The garage had become rather run down and the roof leaked a lot, plus it wasn’t really conveniently located for me,...

Saw this lovely Ural at the end of this past summer after going to the beach, and I just had to photograph it. I actually thought it was an old BMW from far away.

One of theĀ interestingĀ things to note about the 1990 lineup is that many of these bikes were considered sales disasters in the US, but years later the very same bikes became sought after and are now cult classics. The GB500 is a perfect example, as one in very...

The 1990 Honda VTR sales brochure. This bike was a bit more my speed back then (I didn’t even have my motorcycle license yet). I’ll bet it would still be a fun little bike to have today. As a side note, I thought I had the brochures for the RC30 and GB500, but I guess I don’t. I have the full 1990 street lineup though, and will be posting that.

Last night I was able to try out my new plastic welder on the headlight bucket, and here’s how it came out: The inside is reinforced with stainless mesh that is melted into the plastic. Obviously, the bucket needs a lot of finishing work now, but it’s nice and solid and probably at least as strong as it was before. Unfortunately, this was all I got to do last night because I hurt...

While cleaning out the basement and garage, I discovered some Honda sales literature I had saved in a plastic bag since 1990. I scanned them in and I’ll be posting what I have. Here’s the first, for the Honda CB-1, one of the bikes I lusted after way back when. Click on them to go to my Flickr where you can see even larger versions that you can actually read.
